Thought all you old people might get a kick out of this... put your reading glasses on and get close to the screen. Also turn on the sound. Give it a minute - Joe has to get warmed up...

Teaching children

There are two givens when it comes to teaching children - High energy - Short attention span.

It is our experience that the moment you put a child in that typical "Listen, I'm going to tell you something," situation you are already losing them.

One of the many great aspects of tennis is that it is both a sport and a game.

We expose them to the game first. Giving them the simple objective of trying to get the ball on the other side of the net, and letting them… Continue

Improvement requires a plan.

There is a way to improve without a plan - it's called luck.

For those of you serious about improving I heartily recommend developing a plan.

It would go something like this. What's the most important shot in the game - the serve you say? I agree. Now, how much time do you spend practicing this very important shot? If you are like most players - not much.

Basic Strategy for Singles Play

The most common question I get from players in the 3.0 to 4.0 range is: "Why shouldn't I hit the ball down the line?" I have three answers which are all based on the following premise - most point are lost, not won.

Reason 1. If you hit down the line the ball must pass over the highest part of the net.

Reason 2. When hitting down the line you are hitting into the shortest length of the court.

Reason 3. Playing the ball down the line places you farther from… Continue

If you have a desk job like me . . .

Improving your tennis game requires, among other things, that you develop core strength in your torso and pelvic girdle. If you have a desk job that requires you to sit for hours on end in front of a computer screen, try replacing your chair with an inflatable exercise ball. I recently did it. Sure -- I get frequent questions from coworkers about whether I have a bad back. But I explain to them that sitting on the ball allows me to use trunk and pelvic muscles to maintain balance, and I can…

Personality

You have a personality - so does your game. Hopefully they are similar because they should be.

Certainly, you have noticed one or more aspect of your personality that you use to to navigate life and get things done. Determination, creativity, adaptability, calculation - etc. Whatever they are your game should be designed to use them as well.

To illustrate, an impatient person, who is comfortable taking calculated risks would be best served by strokes that are flatter and… Continue
